This Italian newcomer is something of a hidden gem – an otherwise efficient search of the Internet reveals very little about Cristiano Burani. The only thing that catches the eye are several images of feminine style and sporty elegance, which are presented online mainly in conjunction with Milan Fashion Week. The only other information that seems to be available is that the designer had been able to present his collection in the Ukraine. It remains to be seen if this changes as a result of his appearance with Francesca Liberatore and the Leitmotiv label at the Spring/Summer 2013 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. He has attracted interest in any case.
Fashion and Italy – an alliance from which new Wunderkinder constantly emerge. Francesca Liberatore is currently one of these after attracting the attention of some of the fathers of fashion such as Viktor&Rolf in Amsterdam and Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris. Through her collaborations with both of these and her work at Brioni Woman, the designer gained her most important experience, culminating in her success as winner of the Next Generation Contest in 2009. In addition to designs from her new collections – last year for example she discovered fur – the 29-year-old also teaches at Italy’s most prestigious fashion school. Her type and her collections are hotly sought after.
Columbian-born Juan Caro and Milan native Fabio Sasso are the designer duo behind the Leitmotiv label. The two met for the first time in Bologna where they both studied art. The pair’s collections combine art with fashion, often accompanied by a dash of surreal irony. The two have big ambitions: their fashion is designed to be durable yet up to date, amalgamating the past and the future and elevating artisanal skills to haute-couture level. They seem to have achieved these goals so far: Leitmotiv took part in the CNMI’s (Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana) Fashion Incubator Project, presented their feminine collection as part of the Pitti W Woman PreCollection and reached the final stages of the first “Who’s On Next?” award for men’s fashion.
